The first brick wall that I made was a literally constructed painting. Put together as an object in miniature scale, it functioned as a representation of something (a painting) in both two and three-dimensional space. Eventually the walls evolved into other forms such as chairs and letterforms. The series of black and white sculptures were either made for or incorporated into gallery installations. The installations combined black and white laserprints of various images with the sculpture. They have also been exhibited as independent sculptures. The chair form has appealed to me as a "primary object" much in the same way that a square, triangle or circle are regarded as primary shapes. The LADDERBACK combines the form and function of a chair with that of a ladder, simultaneously providing a place to remain and the means to ascend.
